Old-time Clogging Workshop: Step-dancing to live music!

Registration is closed for this event
Clogging is a type of dancing that emphasizes percussion, or drumming with your feet.  Buck dancing and Appalachian Flat-foot clogging are a unique blend of English, Irish, African and Native American step dance styles.  In this two-part clogging workshop you will learn basic rhythm steps. We'll start with bending the knees and walking to the beat of live old-time music, and adding steps as we go along.  No dancing experience is required.  All generations are invited and can enjoy this style of dancing!
The first session will focus on rhythm and posture, while introducing basic steps that we'll put together into short dances to a variety of old-time music tunes.  The second session will focus on adding accent steps to what was learned in session one with more short choreographed dances, and ending with tips on how to do your own free-style clogging.  Some of the steps you'll learn in this workshop are:  The Cotton-eyed Joe, the Buck-step, and the Chug.  You can always do these when you go out dancing, turn on the radio, or are waiting in the grocery store line!
Guest musicians will include Dick Dillof on Banjo and Addy Pollard on fiddle.

If you want to see an example of old-time clogging, view the u-tube link below.  Keep in mind that these are experienced dancers and what we'll be doing in this workshop will be much more basic.

Shoes:  Hard-soled or leather-bottom shoes with a low, solid heel are ideal.  Lisa teaches and dances in clogging tap shoes.  If you have tap shoes, you can bring them, but they are not required.

Please bring layered clothing and plenty of water.  Clogging can be a great workout!

Instructor:  Lisa Beardsley
"I learned my first few old-time clogging steps from the Green Grass Cloggers in North Carolina a decade ago.   I've been a member of the Bridger Beat Cloggers in Bozeman, Montana for six years, where I've learned most of my foot-work.  I enjoy clogging to live banjo and fiddle music and sharing it with anyone who wants to learn.  My background is in art and education.  I believe that anyone who wants to sing, draw or dance can get out there and do it!"
