Learn to Fit a Pattern

Do you sew and sew and still have problems with fit? The secret to a great fit is making your own "sloper". What is a sloper, you ask? It is what all patterns are based on. It is made with little ease (the amount of wiggle room) a garment has. Once you have an accurate sloper you can use it to make any alterations to patterns for a perfect fit. For instance if you have narrow shoulders you will know how to adjust any design so it fits. Perhaps you have a large bust and can never get garments that fit right. The sloper pattern allows you to choose your cup size.

In this class we will work in pairs and you and your partner will fit each other. You will need to wear yoga pants and a snug fitting top like a tank top.

The basic fitting pattern also includes a straight skirt, a long sleeve button front shirt, plus a shirt dress pattern so you can apply what you have learned.

Supplies:

  • McCall's 2718 in your normal size you wear.
  • 1/4" Gingham fabric in the amount per your size on the pattern back (approximately 3 to 4 yards) gingham fabric makes the adjustments easier to make
  • fabric if you want to make the skirt, shirt, or shirt dress (amount per back of pattern)
  • sewing thread
  • sewing pins
  • fabric scissors

About Jeanne Willis:

I grew up in Manhattan. That's Manhattan, NYC. I have always loved crafts and fiber arts. My father owned a sports wear design and manufacturing business in the garment district in NYC. He taught me the finer points of garment making and tailoring. I made my first dress at age six.

My husband and I belong to the Society for Creative Anachronism (sca.org) where we learn about life during the middle ages. I design and make all of our garments and even his armour. I teach at many events that we attend.

We retired here in May 2015 with our five cats and two little dogs. We are down to one cat and two dogs. The cats were elderly rescues and all lived past 18.

We love living in Montana and especially Livingston.
