Beginner to Intermediate

Word is how the business and professional worlds communicate. In this class, you will use the latest version of Word to create professionally formatted and richly illustrated documents. This class will cover all the beginning-to-intermediate Word skill sets. The class is hands-on, using the computers workstations at Park High School.

Word has evolved into an incredibly powerful tool, rivaling high-end desktop publishing programs. You can now create great looking, sophisticated documents in Word, such as: letterheads, newsletters, brochures, even typeset your own booklet, or an entire book for printing. Here are some of the topics we’ll cover in this hands-on, 4-week (8-hours) class:

  • Basic document set-up. The menus, toolbars and keyboard shortcuts.
  • Spelling and grammar checking.
  • Fonts (serif and sans-serif), their types and uses.
  • Inserting and editing pictures and clip art. The importance of photo resolution.
  • Use of tabs, styles and themes; use of tables and columns
  • Print formats, print preview, saving documents to PDF
  • Adding headers and footers, page numbering, etc.
  • Inserting symbols and special characters

More advanced skills in the second half of the program will include:

  • Creating and printing labels, printing on envelopes and other paper sizes
  • SmartArt Graphics, picture adjustments and filters, image compression, pie charts, screen shots
  • Editing and reviewing tools (adding comments, annotations, tracking changes)
  • Creating and editing hyperlinks (live links to the Internet)
  • Mail merge (customize form letters from a mailing list)

Bring your challenging projects to class and we’ll show you how they’re done. Basic computer experience and typing skills are recommended. If you need to brush up on your skills to prepare for this class, call the instructor for some online tutorials. Come and enhance your resume!
