This will be a 6-week class held one day a week.

Each class will begin with a warm up and stretching. Week 1 and 2 will teach the basic core of Belly Dance movements common among all cultures. These movements will include shimmy, hip scoop, hip lift, figure eights, shoulder work and chest circle. Other isolated movements will be practiced for strength and agility and technique.

Week 3 and 4 will continue with the basics and add the Samba and the Flamenco and other Latin movements.

Week 5 we will combine the two into a pre-choreographed song and week 6 will be a 45-min class polishing the song. The last 15 min will be a performance for friends and family to come and watch. This is your chance to shine and show off your newly acquired talent although it is not mandatory if a student is feeling bashful.

If you already have a hip scarf please bring it. You may go barefoot or wear dance slippers or whatever feels most comfortable. This is not a high impact class but arch support may be necessary for some.

A bare tummy is not necessary but a snug top is preferable so you can see your tummy and hips and chest and how they move. Yoga pants tend to work well on the bottom so the hip scarf will move with your body and not be silenced by bulky clothes.

Bring water, a sense of adventure and a smile! We will dance and laugh and be completely silly. Serious dancers have perfect technique with years of training but we are dabble and try and all judgement will be left at the door. iBAILA!

About Joella Dirette:

From the moment my Daddy taught me how to Polka at the age of three I have been passionate for dance. As a member of the MSU Dance Company I studied Jazz, Tap, Theatre and Modern Artistic Movement. I was granted a Charleston role in “A River Runs Through It” in 1991. I danced every chance I got be it Sweet Pea festival or a local farmers market. Later I was introduced to Zumba and as I loved teaching the Latin-based classes, I also became enthralled with the culture of the Latin heritage and it’s many variations. Another sub-culture that I found fascinating was the life of the Gypsy and their fusion of Middle Eastern Belly Dance. I became a student of Tribal Belly Dance and went on to teach a World Fusion class in 2014. An injury cut my teachings short but I am back! I would like to bring you the fusion of Latin Samba, Flamenco, Salsa, Cumbia, Mumba and Cha-cha combined with basic Belly Dance. The sultry and the exotic combination promise to bring you one hour of core building, fire starting, stress releasing fun!
